Since he cant consider being prime minister of the United Kingdom any more and deservedly, in my view, having fumbled his grab for the party leadership at the perfect time, when Labour (and the electorate) would happily have swapped Gordon Brown for anyone who could look into a TV camera without gurning comedically. Also, Miliband minor was still in political short trousers back then (minister for light bulbs, was it?) with no leadership heft at all.
